The Raster side table is more than just a functional piece of furniture; it is an interactive art form. Day explains that the idea for Raster came to him while looking at a rasterized image on his computer screen. He then translated this concept into physical form by manipulating cubes in space, giving the table a sense of life and movement.
What sets Raster apart from other side tables is its use of 20mm blocks to create the illusion of the table being assembled. The 19mm bamboo ply sheet stock is cut using a CNC router and then assembled in layers, resulting in a visually captivating piece that appears to be in the process of being made. This unique design feature not only adds visual interest but also showcases Day's attention to detail and craftsmanship.
The Raster side table is designed to be used next to a chair or sofa, providing a convenient surface for placing drinks, books, or other items. Its dimensions of 450mm width, 450mm depth, and 450mm height make it a versatile piece that can fit seamlessly into various living spaces.
Day Studios, based in Seattle, started working on the Raster side table in November 2014 and completed it in March 2015. Throughout the design process, Day focused on material usage and waste, resulting in a product that minimizes waste and maximizes the use of sustainable materials.
One of the main challenges in creating the Raster side table was the assembly process. With little room for error, all the pieces had to come together seamlessly to achieve the desired effect. Day's dedication to craftsmanship and attention to detail ensured that the final product met his high standards.
The Raster side table has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2016. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. Raster's strong technical characteristics and remarkable level of excellence make it a truly remarkable piece of furniture.
With its unique design, interactive nature, and attention to detail, the Raster side table by Jeffrey A Day is a testament to the fusion of art, architecture, and design. It adds a touch of sophistication and innovation to any living space, making it a must-have for design enthusiasts.
